My philosophy is that Yoga should enhance and improve one’s life without requiring an abrupt lifestyle change. I am dedicated to providing safe, quality Yoga to my students.
Combining technique with flow, we will move through various poses using the breath, always with a strong emphasis on anatomical alignment & deepening our awareness of sensation. For students who already have a strong Yoga practice, I will do my best to provide a community of fellow practitioners who hold the same value of mindful well-being, and for those who want the physical benefits of Yoga but are intimidated or put off by the prospect of classes, I hope to offer a clear, warm approach where they can experience the benefits of a strong, safe physical practice.
Training:
I took my first yoga class over 20 years ago. It was an on/off love affair for the next 12 years as I explored a variety of different styles, classes & teachers - Ashtanga, Baptiste, Bikram, Anusara, Yin, etc, etc... Something kept bringing me back to the practice, yet at the same time something still felt like it was missing. And then I discovered Tias & Surya Little. Introduced to their teachings by Maricarmen Wilson, who at the time was the owner of a wonderful yoga studio that just happened to be next door to the business I then owned. On a (very decadent) whim, I headed off to Santa Fe for a week long intensive with them. What - and how - Tias taught resonated with me on the deepest level & even though my intention for studying with him was never to actually become a teacher, but rather just to deepen my practice, I was hooked & found that the more I practiced, the more I wanted to share the practice. With his encouragement, I completed my 200 hour certification and am currently working towards their 500 hour teacher certification. I have additional certifications from Street Yoga, MD Anderson Integrative Medicine.
I spent most of this year, 2009, in NYC working on deepening my teaching skills. In addition to working for several studios in Brooklyn, I was fortunate to become involved with Bent On Learning, a non-profit that brings yoga into the NYC public schools. In May 2010, I co-founded Community Yoga,
a 501(c)3 not for profit organization that brings free yoga classes to areas of our community that may not otherwise have access. We are currently leading approximately 40 classes/week and are bringing the practice of yoga to prisons, shelters, schools, seniors & vets.
Thanks:
I am grateful to my teachers, Tias & Surya Little, for sharing his passion for the practice & teaching me that sometimes the most subtle movements can be the most powerful; and to the teachers who were so generous in sharing their wisdom, as well as so many opportunities to deepen my practice & strengthen my voice, during the time I spent in NYC: Stephanie Creaturo, Christina Hatgis, & Angela Clark of Mala Yoga; Anne Desmond from Bent On Learning; and Johnathan Fitzgordon. They opened up their studio doors, and their hearts, to me in a way that was way beyond my wildest dreams. And to my wonderful, brilliant anatomy teacher, Marc Frazier.
